I would love help on sorting out this rather complex proposed Lankford family – linking the Stovall, Wiles, Dupree and Walker families. I’ll start by outlining the major conclusions and then trying to fill in the justifications:

Thomas Lankford & Martha West m 1700, New Kent, Virginia (quakers)
Proposed children:
b c1700 Elizabeth m George Stovall
b c1706 Margaret m Luke Wiles
b c1713 James
b c1714 Susanna m Thomas Dupree
b c1716 Judith m Tandy Walker
[This Lankford family developed here – https://adupree.com/wp/g/getperson.php?personID=I7083&tree=adupree

This emerges from the perennial quest for the origins of Susanna, wife of Thomas Deupree. So, I suppose it is good to start from there.

SUSANNAH (LANKFORD?) DUPREE

In 1752 Thomas Dupree is directed by Juday Walker to care for some of her children, “Joel, Lankford and Elizabeth to THOMAS DEPREE,” after the passage of her husband in Lunenburg, Virginia. Lankford Walker is a witness for Thomas Dupree on a 1770 deed in Lunenburg. Susannah’s daughter Mary also names a son Lankford Brizendine.

Given this, it seems fair to say that Susannah and Juday are likely sisters and that the name Lankford is important in some way.

JAMES (LANKFORD) “SANFORD”

A James “Sanford” is a witness on the 1784/1786 will of Thomas Dupree. Sanford could easily be a misreading of Lanford, in turn a variation on Lankford.

As a witness to a will, there is no reason this James need be related to the family or, specifically, be a brother-in-law, but let’s continue and take it into consideration with other facts.

JUDITH (LANKFORD?) WALKER

Judith is often thought to be a Stovall because Tandy Walker, her husband, was granted letters of administration on Hannah Stovall in 1749. This could be Hannah Stovall, daughter of George Stovall and Elizabeth (possibly Lankford).

William Stovall, brother of George Stovall, who died in 1736 was married to a Judith. She has often been identified as Judith “Twitty” with the addition of a tentative question mark. I have not been able to locate the origin of this. However, if this Judith, the sister of Susannah, were also the wife of William Stovall who died in 1736, later married Tandy Walker, that would explain how Tandy came to handle the letters of administration on Judith’s niece, Hannah Stovall. Judith also names a son Lankford, which many have used to posit that this could have been her maiden name.

My conclusion so far is that Judith and Susannah are likely Lankford sisters.

ELIZABETH (LANKFORD) STOVALL AND MARGARET (STOVALL) WILES

George Stovall, the brother of William above, is married to an Elizabeth. Some people give her the maiden name “Cooper.” However, a 1726 deed transfer clearly names Luke Wiley (Luke Wiles) as the brother-in-law of George Stovall. One way of sorting this out is that George Stovall and Margaret, wife of Luke Wiles, are siblings (as has been long asserted). But another, that I pursue here is that George and Luke’s wives are sisters, that is Elizabeth and Margaret. This would explain why Thomas Dupree and Tandy Walker (the husbands of Susanna and Judith) are securities for Luke’s will — if Elizabeth Stovall and Margaret Wiles are sisters, that means that Margaret is the sister of Susanna and Judith, making their husbands her brothers in law.

George Stovall lives on Deep Creek as does Warham Easley (related to Thomas Dupree, husband of Susannah). There are also deeds and a will that connect Thomas Dupree to John Stovall, brother of George, husband of Dorcas.

Luke Wiles, the husband of Margaret, mentions his land on Deep Creek in his 1749 will. As I mentioned, the securities for this will are Thomas Deupree (husband of Susannah) and Tandy Walker (husband of Judith). The Wiles family continues to live near and be associated with the Walker and Deupree families in Lunenburg.

My conclusion is that Elizabeth is a possible sister of Judith and Susannah and so, following this logic would be another Lankford. Lankford is their inferred family (based on Lankford Walker, Lankford Brizendine and James Sanford, I realize this is still speculative but it is not baseless.)

THOMAS AND MARTHA WEST

Connecting these siblings to Thomas Lankford and Martha West, is a matter of proximity and finding a family that could have been big enough for all these children but also have a good reason to be absent from wills and deeds. Thomas and Martha seem good candidates. Married as Quakers in 1700 in Henrico County, Thomas died in 1719 leaving children who were later known as the Lankford Orphans. West, John, Thomas, William James, and Edward are also asserted as children by various folks, although I have not found any other assertions of Susannah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Judith. Of these daughters Martha Wiles is apparently identified as a quaker in the will of Henry Atkinson.

So in summary, it looks to me like the Wiles, Dupree, Stovall and Walker families all married into these four possible Lankford sisters. As the use of a surname as a given name in the proceeding generation is an interesting custom here, I find:
* Dupree – grandson of Susannah (Lankford) Dupree is Lankford Brizendine
* Walker – son of Juday (Lankford) Walker is Lankford Walker
* Wiles – a (poss) great grandson of Margaret (Lankford) Wiles is Lankford Wiles
* Stovall – none found

I am aware that the complex strands of this web can easily be torn asunder and would love to get comments.

The other day I ran into another Indian baptized as an adult in Cornwall in the late 1700’s. Started wondering how unusual it was and thought it might be useful to keep track of these folks. It is, after all, not that hard. The baptisms are easily recognizable because the parents names are left blank, the base born explanation is not given and there is usually a little note about them. Here is what I have so far:

William Pedrick Burn kept a journal from 1879 to 1929. It covers his travels from Millom, England to Pennsylvania, South Dakota, New Mexico and finally to Leadville, Colorado, where he made his home. The journal is largely comprised of daily events. It includes an amusing encounter with a skunk near Deadwood, South Dakota, his accounting for gifts and presents, mentions of family and his political and mining interests. A sample entry follows:

August 7, 1879 (Leaving Millom, England for the United States) My brother, Samuel and I wished and kissed good-bye to Mother and Sisters and Brother Joseph. Father said he would go with us to the Station. So off we started and got as far as Annie Louder Shaft, a distance of two minutes only, when Father said, Boys, I can’t go further and kissed us goodbye. He returned home to Mother where we left her which was the old office aside the Lighthouse of the Hod-barrow Mining Company.

Emil VenzkeAccording to some family members, Emil Gustav Venzke was a stowaway on a ship from Germany. The story, as I heard it, is that Emil stowed away and then later helped his brothers move to Maryland. They lived and farmed in Bel Air and Perry Hall north of Baltimore. Emil must have also helped his father and mother, Gottlieb and Wilhelmine, to come over as the will of Gottlieb is extent (see below).

Unfortunately, I have found litlle clarity in searching German records. A large family of Venzkes also settled in Wisconsin, with names like Emil and Wilhelmine. Surely they are also related to this Emil.

Lavinia was born in Flushing, England, February 24, 1812. She was the only daughter of William Truro and Elizabeth Ann Eddy. Her father ran the Seven Stars, an inn on the main street of Flushing facing the bay and with a view of the city of Falmouth on the other side. The Inn burned down in the late 1900s and was rebuilt. It is still an inn of sorts today with a pub on the first floor. While Lavinia had no full brothers and sisters she had a number of a siblings through her father’s second marriage. Her grandmother Catherine Truro was apparently concerned for her welfare as her will written in 1817 attests. Her children suggest that her family was well off, “My mother’s father, William Truro, kept a large hotel, called the Seven Stars, at Flushing, Cornwall, England, where my mother was raised in comparative luxury and ease (Evolution of a Life, Henry Truro Bray).” These suggestions of modest wealth give rise to curiosity about the families through which Lavinia is descended. Henry also mentions that his mother lived on the Isle of Jersey for some time in an old mansion.

She married Richard Bray on 20 June 1833 and moved with him to a farm in Chacewater (or St. Day), which is a small town in between Falmouth and Truro. As the story, “Forty Miles to Falmouth,” written by her granddaughter Mary Lavinia Bray suggests, the marriage succeeded in estranging her from her family and dooming her to an economic poverty. It is interesting to note that the 1841 UK Census lists Richard Bray as a copper miner and not a farmer.

Marriage record – Parish Kenwyn Husband Forenames Richard Alias Signed BT’s Husband Surname BRAY Alternate Alias Signed BT’s Date 20 Jun 1833 Wife Forenames Lavinia Hore Alias Signed BT’s Wife Surname TRURO Alternate Alias Signed BT’s Date BT’s Remarks

Over time most of her children moved, one by one, to work in the mines of the United States, particularly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Leadville, Colorado. Her husband died in 1864 and she moved afterwards with her youngest son Joseph to be near her two oldest sons Henry Truro and Richard George in Michigan. She lived with Joseph in Marquette, Michigan until his death in 1894 and then moved in with her daughter Priscilla Painter in Negaunee, Michigan for the six years to her own death on June 16, 1900. She is buried in the Negaunee, Michigan Cemetery Plot: Lot 29 Block 31 PAYNTER PLOT.

Her granddaughter Edith Bray Currie Hooper writes about her:

Our grandmother was a proud little woman. Her father was an innkeeper in Truro, Cornwall (Truro was her family name). Lavinia Howe Truro was her given name. She was sent to finishing school, so she never learned the Cornish dialect. Her advice to me – “Remember who you are.” When I went to the library, she would invariably say – “Get me a good love story” and the librarian was always obliging. When in trouble, I always ran to her, was consoled by her loving plus a peppermint candy from a sack which she kept in her apron pocket. She had a chair by the front room window, did a lot of reading and knitting, and very little walking.

Grandma Bray was a plump little lady, about five feet tall, never did any housework, but when our mother was away on an errand, she would find an article she could wash in a basin in deep suds. When our father left this world, she went to live with our Aunt Priscilla in Negaunee, so we lost two members of our family who expressed deep affection for us. I cried, “There is no one left to love me” – remember the time and place of that cry of desolation. The two who showed affection outwardly.

Clive after the Battle of Buxar

Henry Truro Bray wrote in his book, The Evolution of a Life, that his great grandfather was a Bengali prince who was kidnapped by the British while bathing. Henry himself was quite a character, a renegade Methodist minister who gave up his religious career to write books on physics and spiritualism around the turn of the century. In one of his books he describes how a former Egyptian, now running for office on Jupiter, had visited him to ask for a letter of recommendation.

However romanticized HTB’s family stories have checked out at every turn. And the baptismal record in the Church of England at Truro for a “Peter Truro” in 1777 confirms that Peter is an adult (he marries two years later) and that he is a foreigner (literally “a black”). Peter’s family of mariners lived in Flushing and ran The Seven Stars, an inn which is still standing today (albeit, it has new walls after burning down at the turn of the 20th century).
