{"id":2077,"date":"2017-06-24T18:10:59","date_gmt":"2017-06-24T18:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adupree.com\/wp\/?p=2077"},"modified":"2026-01-22T07:26:51","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T07:26:51","slug":"mapping-the-baltimore-germans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adupree.com\/wp\/archives\/2077","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Baltimore Mullers and Gerstners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my Baltimore German families maps interconnections between the Mullers, Hipchens, Gerstners and Ruffers.<\/p>\n<p>A quick recap.\u00a0 In the baptismal registers of Holy Cross and St Michael&#8217;s Catholic churches in Baltimore godparents for the children in the families above tend to be in a relatively closed circle.\u00a0 Witnesses on marriage records are also in this circle.\u00a0 It turns out that George Hipchen married Margaret Gerstner and Joseph Ruffer married Mary Gerstner. They are likely sisters. Both are from Oberschwarzach.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Muller&#8217;s connection is somewhat more difficult.\u00a0 He is also from Oberschwarzach. He married Annie Hildl (from Kasl) in 1889.\u00a0 Witnesses where Joseph Ruffer and John Gerstner (Garsten).\u00a0 His parents are given as Michael Muller and <strong>Anna Maria<\/strong>. \u00a0 In her marriage record, Mary Gestner&#8217;s folks are listed as George Gerstner and <strong>Anna Maria<\/strong>.\u00a0 Furthermore, if it is correct, Josef Muller immigrated on the Cimbria in 1882 with Christian and Margaret Gerstner (but they entered in New York, not Baltimore).\u00a0 I think the simplest explanation is that <strong>Anna Maria <\/strong>is the same woman who married first Michael Muller and second George Gerstner.\u00a0 This can explain the closeness of the Gerstner and Muller families.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Gerstner\/Muller family from Oberschwarzach, Bavaria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Anna Maria &amp; Michael Muller<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b 1853 &#8211; Joseph Muller<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Anna Maria &amp; George Gerstner<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b 1861 Margaret Gerstner (m George Hipchen)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b 1865 Christian Gerstner (lives in NYC)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b 1867 Mary Gerstner (m Joseph Ruffer)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b 1870 John Gerstner (m Barbara Scheussler)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">see <a href=\"https:\/\/adupree.com\/wp\/g\/getperson.php?personID=I27274&amp;tree=adupree\">Anna Maria of Oberschwarzach<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this way all would be siblings or half siblings.<\/p>\n<p>The city directories of Baltimore also show the families together at different addresses throughout the 1890s and 1900.\u00a0 Furthermore, the orphaned children of Joseph Muller are later to show up at these addresses, presumably taken in by their (half) aunts.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a map to give a sense of the complexity of the interrelations.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my Baltimore German families maps interconnections between the Mullers, Hipchens, Gerstners and Ruffers.
